Adding a quiz to a course
A quiz reaches learners through a course. In the LMS, Quiz is a step resource type alongside rich text, WP post, and video, so adding a quiz is adding a step and pointing it at one.
Before you start
The quiz must be published. A quiz step selects an existing quiz from a dropdown; there is no way to create one from inside the course builder.
Insert it
Open the course and go to its Builder tab. There are two routes.
From the inserter. Open the inserter with the + button in the toolbar, find the quiz, and drag it into the position you want in the outline.
As a new step. Inside the section where it belongs, click Add Step, then set the step's Resource Type to Quiz and choose the quiz from the dropdown.
Either way you end up with a step whose resource is that quiz. The inspector labels it a Quiz Step.
Configure the step
A quiz step takes the same step settings as any other. See step and section settings. The ones that matter most here:
- Progression blocking: whether the learner must complete the quiz before moving on.
- Scheduled availability: when the quiz becomes accessible.
- Duration: the expected time, feeding the course's completion timeline.
A quiz carries its own Expected duration under Constraints, and the LMS uses it for course pacing. Setting it once on the quiz means every course reusing that quiz inherits a sensible figure.
Publish
Save the course and publish a version. Then preview it, or view it as an enrolled learner, to confirm the quiz renders in the player.
Administrators bypass most progression gates, so an admin walkthrough will not show you what a learner experiences. Enroll a test user and log in as them. See managing enrollments.
One quiz, many courses
Because the course references the quiz rather than copying it, the same quiz can sit in several courses at once. Editing the quiz changes it in all of them.
That is usually the point, a standard assessment maintained in one place. But it means a quiz being used elsewhere deserves the same care as a shared question: check before you change it.
