Creating a question

This is the short path through the question editor for a typical multiple-choice question.

1. Write the prompt

  1. Replace the default title with something you will recognise in the question pool. It is an internal name as much as a heading, and "Untitled question" is no help six months later.
  2. Write the question itself in the Description panel using the block editor. Add images, formatting, or lists as needed.

2. Add answers and points

  1. Type each option into an answer row.
  2. Tick Correct beside the right answer, or answers, for a multiple-choice question.
  3. Set the points each answer awards.
  4. Add Answer for more options; the duplicate icon clones a row you have already formatted.

Maximum earnable points in the sidebar updates itself from these values for automatically graded questions, so you do not set the total by hand.

Partial credit is just points on a wrong answer

There is nothing special to switch on. Give a defensible-but-not-best option one point and the best option three, and the question awards partial credit.

3. Add feedback and a hint

  1. Write Message for the correct answer.
  2. Turn on Different message for incorrect answer if a wrong answer deserves its own explanation rather than the same text.
  3. Turn on Enable solution hint and write the hint if candidates should be able to ask for a nudge.

4. Set difficulty, type and grading

In the sidebar:

  1. Difficulty: pick from your site's scale.
  2. Question type: Single choice, Multiple choice, Extended text, or Upload.
  3. Grading type: Automatic for choice questions; Manual for extended text and uploads, or for choice questions you want a person to review.
  4. Constraints: whether the question can be skipped, and its maximum attempts.

5. Publish

Click Publish Draft. The question is saved into the site-wide pool, ready to be placed in any quiz.

For a question already in use, publishing updates the pool but not what published quizzes deliver. Each quiz using it directly gains a draft and a Questions have changed banner, and delivers the update on its next publish; a question inside a shared section delivers when the section republishes. See publishing is what delivers question updates.

Check Associated Quizzes before editing an existing question

Questions are shared, not copied. Editing one changes it in every quiz that uses it, each on its owner's next publish. The Associated Quizzes panel in the sidebar tells you which those are, so read it before changing a question you did not just create.

Adding it to a quiz

A published question is available in the quiz builder's inserter immediately. Open the quiz, go to Builder, find the question in the Questions tab, tick it, and click Add selected. See building your quiz.
